What could be more important than defining your family mission?
Your mission, should you choose to grow closer as a family, is to volunteer at a charity or donate to a cause. Why? Because choosing to focus on a cause that is larger than your family will create focus, appreciation, respect for others, awareness of the world around you, and doing it as a family will just feel great.
Even very young children are able to understand the concepts sharing, giving and kindness. These are the fundamental building blocks that make us productive members of society. They also are the emotional and spiritual fuel that makes us tick.
For example, every year, I work with my kids to review stories of children in poverty-stricken children who can be helped by donating an animal through Heifer International . The premise of their organization is the gift of an income producing animal to a family that pledges to learn to care for it, and give its offspring to another deserving family. This seemingly simple, and affordable gesture, can pull an entire village out of poverty. They just received a $42.8 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their wonderful work in developing countries.
You could just as easily pick your local elementary school, a foundation to find a cure for a disease that afflicts a dear family member, or volunteer at a nursing home.
It matters not how you make your mark, just that you make your mark, and involve your children. Set them up to appreciate the blessings they have, and chart a course for a lifetime of service.
And remember, all super heroes have a clear mission. As you set down this path of improvement as a hero, you and your family need to declare yours too. What are you passionate about? What do you stand for? You can and should find ways to show that to the rest of the world.
I assume that many of you already do volunteer. (Thanks, by the way.) Please find ways to incorporate your children in this work. They'll never forget it and you'll never regret it.
